Mosque of Süleyman the Magnificent Blue Mosque Hagia Sophia

The Mosque of Süleyman I, or Süleyman the Magnificent, is one of the best examples of Ottoman architecture. This is its courtyard.

This mosque was built around 1555, and the architect was Sinan, the biggest name in Ottoman architects.

Here we have one of the portals of the soaring mosque.

The Blue Mosque was built around 1615 by Sultan Ahmet. The dominant color, both inside and out, is blue. One of Sinan's students was the architect for this structure.

Hagia Sophia has a long history. It started as a Byzantine church, built around 535 AD by Emperor Justinian I. It was subsequently remodeled into a mosque by the Ottomans. Now it is a museum, and it is in the process of major renovations.

The Ottomans plastered over many of the Byzantine mosaics. This had the effect of preserving them. This is one of a dozen or more examples that have been revealed.
